The Ebb and Flow of Story

The Ebb and Flow of Story

I’m writing again.

If you’ve following the blog for a while, you’ll know I generally write between 90,000 and 150,000 words of new fiction each year.

On the first of March, I had written a grand total of 383 words. I’m now up to 5,700 words, which means I’m finally back in the writing space.

But then, having finished a story draft and wanting to leave some space before jumping into the next one, I began dabbling in some non-fiction writing. I’m still not quite sure how I feel about it, and for now, it’s serving more of a journal and ‘notes-to-myself’ than a useful book for others, but hey, it’s a dabble into something I’m less comfortable and familiar with.

But it means I’m still writing.

I’ve always felt having ‘breaks’ helped me: if we keep pouring out words, we soon run dry. But over the last 2 weeks I’ve been discovering I have two separate wells for writing. In a way, I’ve written non-fiction through blog entries since 2005, but this year my efforts feel more substantial. I can feel the weight of needing to write these things down again, and for now, I’m trusting myself as a writer to follow that process.

Do you journal or write non-fiction in between (or during) fiction projects?
