A few weeks ago, I shared information about Planes Shifter and Planes Walker, as I was tagged by C. R. Trumbo in a Blog Hop called The Next Big Thing.
I’ve just begun revising my summer project of 2010, Seven Sisters and thought I’d share a little bit about it here.
1) What is the working title of your book?
Seven Sisters is a standalone new adult fantasy book that began as a “rewrite” of my first ever novel attempt.
2) Where did the idea come from for the book?
Seven Sisters began as a “rewrite” of my first ever novel attempt, Variations of Light. Variations was a National Novel Writing Month attempt, and in order to meet the deadline of 50,000 words, I ended up almost plagiarising books I’d just finished reading. When I came to “rewrite” this the following year, I ended up just using Variations as the back-story for one of the seven character’s parents instead. Thus, Seven Sisters kind of served as a sequel. Then, the original first novel became redundant (other than as a learning experience) once this draft was finished, as the important bits were re-written and added to this piece.
3) What genre does your book fall under?
Young Adult Post-apocalyptic Fantasy. On reflection, it would probably serve as the newly-emerging New Adult category too.
4) Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
I haven’t got that far, although the antagonist would be well-played by Ian Somerhalder.
5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
It really depends how much I change in this revision. I haven’t seen this manuscript in three years.
Right now I’d summarise it as:
“When the world is gifted with magic, the sides of those with the gift and those without brings about devastation to the world. The first eight children born with a facet of powers must find the others who have been given the parts they is missing. Only in combining their power, can the seven sisters put the spirits of stars to rest.”
I know that’s more than a sentence, but shhh…
6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Not yet decided. Hopefully represented.
7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
50 days.
8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
The Old Kingdom trilogy by Garth Nix.
9) Who or what inspired you to write this book?
The Greek myths and stories around how certain constellations came to be. Then discussing one of those stories with my friend and fellow writer, Ciarán Hodgers, he suggested I write a novel with the myth as a creation story.
10) What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
It’s a mass romance, with fantasy elements at its heart, and a fight between freedom and justice.
