NaNoWriMo 2017 :: Preparations

I’ve taken part in seven National Novel Writing Month‘s across eight years.

This year, I’m focusing on a new project, which I’m currently fleshing out. That’s the joy of October: I get to explore the characters, setting, and attempt to shape some kind of plot, but dare not allow myself to begin writing until November 1st.

My 2017 Project

I’m going to step out of my comfort zone this year. The only first person books I read are Alpha, Beta and ARC reads: they take me a while to get into, although many people find them easier to read. So my challenge this year is to write one.

My main character’s current work-in-progress name is Tilly, but being first person, that shouldn’t matter much. The setting is currently beginning in a forest, and I have a prototype for my antagonist.

Organisation

So far, things are confined to one word document, complete with a mostly-empty plotting table. I’m aiming to have around 25 ‘plot point events’ ready by October 31st, which gives me a structure, with enough freedom to alter things a little if each scene is around 1,000 words.

As a standalone NaNo novel, I won’t make a Scrivener file at this stage, although if I have a salvageable story at the end, that’ll be the next step.

When do you begin preparing for NaNoWriMo?

How do you like to get the story ready?
